Gilpatrick Milligan
Born in Yakima, Washington, “Gil” was destined to be in the music business. The doctor who delivered him was an ex-missionary doctor with 20 years in China. Gil was born with a vail that covered his entire head, the doctor exclaimed, “This boy is to be a prophet.” Even though this had not been taken seriously, one can see a keen sense of ability and understanding in his writings and his songs.
At the age of three years, Gil was enchanted with sounds. Picking on the strings of his dad’s guitar with one hand, and beating on a toy drum with the other, he would sing his songs of emotion, usually at the top of his lungs, and at the expense of his parents nerves. At the age of five years, he made his first recording of the song “I Thought I Saw a Pussy Cat,” on a home recorder. But the family, having two older boys in high school, could not financially support Gil’s musical desires. Also, during that time, being a musician as a profession was discouraged because it was not a financially secure way of life.
After spending time mowing yards and doing other odd jobs, Gil was able to purchase his first guitar at the age of twelve. He took three years of practice to gain enough facility to be accepted in various bands in his school.
At the age of 15, Gil, and his family moved to a ranch on Chinook Pass in Naches, WA. He began a new segment of his life, making new friends, and playing in various bands, and writing his songs.
Gil did numerous jobs (music related, and not music related) and met many people who encouraged him to follow his heart. He made many recordings and was a master in stating his opinions in his lyrics and styles.
Gil has always been a songwriter, he considered himself a “Tunesmith.” He wrote for children young and old. He was never without words, and was passionate about all of his ideas, lyrics, and guitar playing.
In his later years, he took music theory classes and learned the art of being a jazz guitarist.
He wrote and published “The Universe” album, his “Growing Old” album, and was working on another album at the time of his death from a long battle with colorectal cancer on July 7, 2022.
Gil was an inspiration to his children, grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the love of my life, and it is my goal to get his writings and his songs out for everyone to read and hear.
